Supported by the Fund for Regional Cooperation in Asia Program and K. C. Wong Education Foundation, the International Workshop on Biochar and Sustainable Agriculture was held at NAU. The workshop also served as the China/ASEAN Technology Training on Biochar and Sustainable Agriculture.
The topics of the Workshop include the characteristics and trend of international biochar technology development, the approaches to apply biochar technology in industries and social service, and its development in Asia and worldwide. Scholars shared with each other the technologies, experience, and the modes of applying biochar technology and recycling agricultural waste in China and ASEAN countries. The Workshop also explored the potential and organization of biochar agriculture and its application in environmental services so as to improve the utilization of agricultural waste and biomass resources and the sustainability of agricultural development in Asia and worldwide. The Workshop also drew a blueprint for agricultural biomass technology and its commercialization in Asia and the world.
The Workshop also helped to build a network for sustainable biochar agriculture in Asia to promote the cooperation and exchange among China, ASEAN countries and other Asian countries in sustainable biochar agriculture. It served as a win-win platform for communication, cooperation and sharing in the development of agricultural biomass industry and technology as well as the sustainability of agriculture and environment in Asia.
The Workshop was followed by a four-day China/ASEAN Technology Training on Biochar and Sustainable Agriculture. The training program consists of courses on biochar production and technology application, introduction of biochar technology and equipment and also field trips to biochar production sites. Visits to the demonstration center of NAU Green Biomass Project located in Luhe, Nanjing and the NAU test and development center of biomass carbonization located in Jinhua, Zhejiang province were organized for the trainees. After the training, the trainees were awarded with a course-completion certificate.
