The Centennial Anniversary of Four-Year Bachelor Program in Agriculture by the University of Nanking

On October 20th, a forum to commemorate the Centennial Anniversary for the initiation of four-year bachelor program in agriculture in China by the University of Nanking was held in Nanjing Agricultural University (NAU).

NAU Vice President Dong Weichun reviewed the developing history of undergraduate education in agriculture in the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Nanking. He said, it is significant to celebrate the centennial anniversary for the initiation of four-year bachelor program today since it is the 112th anniversary of NAU and also NAU has entered top 100 universities in agriculture science in the world. He also reviewed a few significant events marking the developing history of undergraduate education in agriculture at the University of Nanking, including the founding of the department of agriculture at the University of Nanking by Pei Yili,, the founding of the department of forestry at the university of Nanking and the Chinese Arbor Day, the founding of Chinese Agriculture Association, the founding of the department of agricultural economics and Dr. John Buck, Pearl Buck, the Nobel Prize winner for literature, the Nanking chronicle, the Central Agricultural Experiment Station and the graduate education in agriculture at the early stage.

Wang Tian, director of Department of Undergraduate Academic Affairs, summarized the history of undergraduate education from the University of Nanking to Nanjing Agricultural College, and to Nanjing Agricultural University. Quoted from Wang, during over 100 year’s education, NAU’s contribution to China's higher education in agriculture and to modern agriculture is widely recognized nationwide. NAU is committed to its mission in offering high-quality education, advancing scientific research and providing social service. He also shared that NAU is approved as the pilot university for Talent Training Program in Agriculture and Forestry. Eight majors in NAU are listed in the trial Program for Training Innovative and Comprehensive Talents in Agriculture and Forestry.

Representatives of the emeritus faculties were invited to attend the forum and offered their suggestions on higher education in agriculture.

Chancellor, Zuo Wei emphasized the significance of the bachelor program in agriculture offered by the University of Nanking and its contribution to the agricultural production in China, agriculture discipline construction and the university development. Quoted from him, given the solid foundation we have built through over 100 years’ education, research and extension, we are moving steadily towards NAU’s goal of building into a world-class agricultural university.
